Golden Week

We have this "golden week" off in celebration of National Day, the day in 1949 when Chairman Mao declared the founding of the People's Republic of China. It's sort of like the Fourth of July only without the independence part. I spent National Day with a (largely European) expat hiking group that went out beyond the Ming tombs for a long day of valleys, trails, streams, and boulders. I really don't know where we were exactly, but we ended up at the top of a peak with a great view of one remote chunk of the Great Wall. The day was also a fascinating display of European trekking styles: the Germans brought out their rock-climbing shoes (show offs), the Austrian family hiked with nordic poles, and the French couple stopped to take cigarette breaks.

where's the duck's (?) other foot?????
and the italians would have been answering their cell phones with "si mamma, mi sono portata il panino, non ti preocupare..."
And did you do us Californians proud and wear your Uggs boots with your shorts or jewel-studded flip-flops? ;)
Truly cosmopolitan and international! Who knew? And the photos are beautiful! Cute--"without the independence part!"
