It's a mall world after all

America's proud export, the shopping mall, can be found throughout Beijing. Thanks to US developers investing in China over the past few years, you can readily find an outdoor shopping arcade that's indistinguishable from the Grove in LA or (the new) Del Amo in Torrance or Fashion Island in Newport Beach or Bella Terra in Huntington Beach or... you get the idea. This mall, called Solana, which is where the All-Star Restaurant and Bar is located, houses Sephora, Starbucks, Cold Stone Creamery, North Face, Zara, among others. And, of course, a suburban mall can't be complete without a multiplex and an indoor ice skating rink. But the biggest surprise came when I stumbled upon my
old friend from Freeport, Maine.

Wow it's so empty. Were you there with old people mall walkers?? God I hate Cold Stone Creamery. It's a scourge.

The emptiness struck me too. What time of the day were the pics taken?

So, Jean, did it make you feel at home or creep you out?

So empty! And I love the two dudes squatting - right next to a bench!

The cold stone creamery by the Village Green just closed. No more walks for over-sweet ice cream with brownies mashed into it for me.

Wait!! You said that they hadn't sunken so low as to use Christmas to pump up the consumerisim in China. But there he is, Santa in all his "Come buy useless shit" glory! It's just so - wrong!

BTW, I like the guys squatting next to the bench too!

This place had me more confused than nostalgic. I didn't know where I was and kept thinking I needed to validate my parking. It was around 32 degrees at around 10am. It's a brand new mall so it's still partially vacant. Wonder if the economy will impact its occupancy.

isn't this disturbing? you go to another country to get away, and you get the same exact crap anywhere you go. it's like you're in the twilight zone! -v
