Election day at the Embassy

Thanks to a friend with the hook up, I watched the election returns this morning at a very cool party hosted by the US Embassy. Dressed in red, white, and blue, the hotel ballroom was packed with over 600 Chinese and American guests. The event wasn't short on energetic people and tasty American food. The Ambassador's remarks got upstaged by thunderous cheers for Obama's win in Ohio. After all, no one was there to hear the Ambassador speak. I hung out with friends of friends who were the only African-Americans at the party so when Obama was declared the winner, the Chinese news media crushed them for photographs and interviews. Meanwhile, the other Chinese folk only seemed interested in posing with cardboard cutouts of McCain and Obama (any opportunity to whip out their cameras and flash the "victory" sign, they're a happy bunch).

Your friend with the blue hat that was swarmed by the media was all over the Reuters photos and such...definitely her 15 minutes of fame that she probably never expected! :)
