First day of teaching

So my arse is still sore from the kicking it got this afternoon by my students. I was warned. I was warned that the undergraduate business/econ students were among the best and the brightest in all of China as business/econ is one of the most competitive majors at this elite university. I was also warned that they speak excellent English.
Well, it's all true. I found out early when I asked each of them to ask me a question as if they were interviewing me for a job. The first question fired at me was, "so please tell me your view of the Lehman Brothers situation." Yeah, next. Granted not all questions were like that. I got asked everything from my marital status to my favorite Laker. But my favorite question went like this: "It seems to me that you are a little bit Chinese. Can you tell me, please, are you a half-blooded lady?"

Wow... not sure what I'd say in response to the Lehman question, but I don't think I'd've made a great impression. Did they ask you stuff about the election, too?

Any lazy Koreans in your class?

In other news, I'm excited that the "bad news feed" (breaking news) at right is now updating! It was stuck on the same news from Aug 30/31 for a while. I still think in a massive country w/1.3 bil people, there would be more bad news every day!

I love how there's a guy in the classic squat in your picture of the school.

So who did you say was your favorite Laker?

How many students in your class and what's the gender mix?

well, at least they didn't ask if you were somehow associated with the paralympics...

Good eye, Cherie! My man's doing the classic smoking-cigarette squat.

Jean, I told Tony about your hard-hitting questions and he said "Of course! These are the smartest young people in China, and being in the MBA program means they are going to really GO PLACES. They are aware that only the most intelligent individuals were selected as Tsing-Hua instructors, so they think Jean will know everything." He then pointed out that you'll have a really great network of connections after teaching these future leaders.

He also asked if you're sick of Chinese food yet, and recommended Pizza Hut. I told him I don't think you ate at PH in the USA, but he says it's better in China than it is here - better crust, better toppings.... you'll have to let us know!

BTW, Cherie: I said Derek Fisher. I was met with audible disappointment. They wanted me to say Kobe.

Hey, Fisher's a good answer. Kobe would've been too predictable of a choice. There's a new Chinese player joining the Lakers next season - your students probably know this already.

I am proud of you for answering Derek Fisher. I would have said "I hate the Lakers" which would have been met with something else. So glad you didn't say Kobe. Cherie's right--predictable answer, which means BORING!
