Middle-class suburban America
Many of my students have given themselves English names. I was prepared for some really cuckoo names; but surprisingly, they're all pretty normal. A little too normal in fact. I started asking how they got their names and most explained that they had attended Tsinghua English Summer Camp which was run by students and faculty from the University of Tennessee so they were given names by their Knoxville friends.
My classes are filled with popular American names like Ava, Jacob, Emma, Justin, Luke, Claire, and Hannah. "The Godfather" is a cult favorite among the male students so I've met a bunch of Michaels and one Corleone. Of course, every class has its standout names, like: Pluto, Snowy, Wince, and Ball. And the winner? Goes to an unathletic, bespectacled finance major named LeBron.

I hope you'll let them know about the Sarah Palin name generator in case any of the Jacobs or Emmas want something more unique!

lebron. auntie jean, you have made my day.
Hilarious. I laughed out loud after reading this. So are your students using these names just in school or do they intend to continue using them after they graduate?
I have ALWAYS wanted to name a chinese baby LeBron or Leroy. Not mine, mind you, but still. That is awesome.
But Corleone? That's so weird.
I always found it curious why a lot of chinese men (at least in America) had John, Michael, David.
